Some weeks ago, I asked a colleague this question, I said “before you were born, you were never alive. After you were born, this life became your reality. But what happens when you are gone? Would you realise that that which you thought was reality was actually an illusion? Or just a foretaste of what is and had actually always been? Where were you before you were born? Where would you be after you are gone?”
Yes, this present look on your face was actually the same way he gazed at me in utter confusion. But truth be told, most of us in this contemporary world do not take time out of this really fast paced, routine regulated society to do a deep reflection on ourselves and ask some basic but really important life questions. These include asking questions like:
- Who am i?
- Where did I come from?
- Why am I here?
- Where am I going?
- What can I do?
Let me tell you a quick story, a farmer once had a vision of providing apple juice for his community, so he decided to plant an apple orchard. He did all he needed to do and after some years, the apple trees were fully grown. But something happened, the trees weren’t producing any fruits year after year even after the farmer had done all he was supposed to do, yet there was no progress. Out of frustration, he decided to cut the trees down and burn them all up.
Now, we all are that tree planted here on earth with an innate ability to bear fruits which should be served to our world. The creator on the other hand, is the farmer who works tirelessly in order to ensure we manifest our truest self.
There is a purpose for which we are still breathing; there is a reason why you are where you are, regardless of what life is dishing you, there is a reason why God is letting you go through what you are going through.
What is Purpose?
Purpose is defined as the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists. When you do something with purpose, you do it with determination. When your activities have a purpose, you have an aim or intention in mind.
Today, we would be focusing on the reason for which man was created. And when I say Man, I mean you and I. who are we? Why are we here? Where are we going?
I would try to touch and tackle those various questions every one of us has been struggling with in this article. So stick around, get comfortable, grab a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and read along.
WHO AM I?
This is a question about identity which we have all struggled with at one stage of our lives and which some of us are still struggling with. The “Who am I” question is one which disturbs every human. Rich or poor, black or white, male or female and it is one which needs to be answered and understood as quick as possible. This is very necessary because you cannot value yourself if you do not know yourself, and nobody else would value you if you do not value you.
“You cannot value yourself if you do not know yourself, and nobody else would value you if you do not value you.”
Question: how do I then get to know who I am?
Answer: Ask the manufacturer!
As a child, I pondered this same question a lot. Until one rainy Thursday afternoon, haven just gotten back from school, I ran to my mother’s room filled with so much excitement and zest. My mother was having her nap at the time and she hates to be disturbed when asleep, but I didn’t care. I just kept tapping her until she got up. With a broad grin on my face, I said to her “I’ve finally got it mummy, I know where we came from.” Still looking perplexed, she asked “Where?” I gave her a minute to make sure she was fully awake, and then I answered “we evolved from apes, mummy!” I earlier had a class on evolution in school but I guess my answer didn’t impress my mother in any way. If anything, it actually alarmed her and the next thing I saw was she getting out her huge bible and taking me through the story of creation.
We got to Genesis 1:26-28 and she wanted me to read it out loud so I would not only hear the words, but it would sink into my very soul. It would be nice if you do the same in order to fill the power of God’s word
26. Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.”
27. So God created human beings in His own image. In the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.
28. Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.”
From that point on, not only did I realise that I came from the creator, but that I was also created in His image and made to be like Him. How cool is that? “I have God flowing through my veins?” I asked “Yes, you do!” “So what does that mean?” I asked again. “It means you are a child of God, it means God’s very Spirit lives within you so there is absolutely nothing you cannot do. All you have to do is have faith in God and believe in yourself.”
The scriptures say:
Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us. – Ephesians 3:20
Now, this is the identity of every human being on the face of the earth but sadly, the devil has done a good job in blinding us to the truth about our very existence. We were created in God, by God, for God and to be like God. But how do you know the truth if you do not know the One who is the Truth Himself
The Scriptures say:
“My people are being destroyed because they do not know me.” (Hosea 4:6a)
“Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
To answer the question of “How to know who we are” I answered “Ask the manufacturer!” because at the end of the day, nobody knows a product better than the one who made the product, the manufacturer! God is our manufacturer and we are His products. In fact, He calls us His masterpiece. Would you believe that?!
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” (Ephesians 2:10)
Knowledge of who God is automatically ensures we have knowledge of ourselves. Then we begin to see what God sees in us and also say what God says about us. Today, this is what the Lord says about you…
- You are handsome/beautiful
- You are smart
- You count
- You are a Success
- You can do all things
- You are great
- You are a child of God
Say these words to yourself at every given opportunity because words are indeed powerful having the ability to create and destroy. Never forget that you are very valuable to God and He has planted us as lights to reflect His glory in this dark world.
You are the light of the world-like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.
This is the word for you today. Until next time, we’d talk about the other questions which need to be answered in order to fulfil purpose’. Thank you and God bless.
